De la Hoya’s Grand Finale

de-la-hoyas-grand-finaleWhen the end came, it was the real Boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya has announced his retirement, from the sport at the age of 36. De la Hoya, nicknamed ‘Golden Boy’, held world titles at six different weights and ends with a win-loss record of 39-6 with 30 knockouts. He also won a gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and won the first of his 10 world titles at super-featherweight before eventually moving up to middleweight.

Dela Hoya beat Julio Cesar Chavez for the light welterweight championship twice and claimed the unofficial crown of the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world when he beat Pernell Whitaker for the WBC welterweight crown in 1997. He lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2007 but it was defeat by Manny Pacquiao last December, his last fight that pushed him towards retirement.

De la Hoya said that he have come to the conclusion that it is over. This was a decision that he was going back and forth with, thinking that he can do it one more time. He also added that “Boxing is my passion, boxing is what I was born to do and when I can’t do it anymore, when I can’t compete at the highest level, it’s not fair.”But it’s not fair to me, it’s not fair to the fans, it’s not fair to nobody. I’ve come to the conclusion that it is over, it’s over inside the ring for me.”

He will now concentrate on boxing promotion with the Golden Boy Promotions Company that he has been running since 2001, while he also has several other business interests.
