old paint disposal

If you have an old paint sitting in your basement and you need to dispose all of this, then you are halt with the question “Is it safe to throw out this material?”

Well, it depends. Latex or water-based paint must be dried out first. Here’s a trick to spend that up: If there isn’t much paint left, just stir a non-flammable absorbent such as kitty litter into the can, let it dry (outdoors, away from kids, pets, and anything flammable), and toss in a sealed bag. If there’s a lot left over, fill the box with the absorbent, then pour paint over it. Again, let the mix dry, and then throw it out.

Paint that’s oil-based (or made before 1977, when brands often contained lead) is considered hazardous waste.
