differences…

January 20, 2008 by dhenzcha · 12 Comments

~guys here are another batch for those differences:

What is the difference between dissemble and disassemble?

Disassemble means ‘to take something apart’. You can see that the word can be split into a prefix dis- and the root assemble. An example is: She disassembled the Lego creation. Dissemble means ‘to alter or change the appearance of in order to deceive or conceal; to misrepresent or pretend’. This word’s etymology is trickier: it may be a form of dissimule, which means ‘to alter the semblance of in order to deceive or conceal’. So, the breakdown of dissemble is dis- and the root semble, or ‘appear, seem’. An example of this word is: We witnessed the dissembled persecution of good citizens.

What is the difference between advice and advise?

The first is a noun, the second a verb. Advice is a noun generally meaning ‘an opinion about what could or should be done in a situation or about a problem; counsel given’ as is “You never take my advice!” Advise is a verb meaning ‘to offer advice to; to counsel’ as in “We advise you to unplug the appliance before cleaning it.” If you have trouble remembering which is which, think of the pronunciation: the verb has the z sound at the end, but you would not pronounce a word ending in -ice as -ize.

What is the difference between complacent and complaisant?

Complaisant means ‘eager to please’ and ’showing a cheerful willingness to fulfill others’ wishes’. Complacent is quite the opposite, ‘being pleased with oneself; contented to a fault’. However, they share one meaning, which may cause them to be confused – each also carries the sense of ‘obliging, agreeable’. One could differentiate the two words by saying that complaisant is the active adverb and complacent denotes a more passive feeling. Complaisant was first recorded in 1647, deriving from Latin complacere. Complacent comes from the same Latin word, but is not found in writing until 1660.

Ghost stories!!!

January 14, 2008 by dhenzcha · 4 Comments

~guys I would like to share this ghost story with you,I just like to post it hehehe… Although personally i don’t believe in dead spirit going back to haunt us. What i do believe is those so called ghosts are evil spirits playing with our mind. Sometimes they are real but most of the time it’s just a figment of our own imagination.

ADAMSON UNIVERSITY
A girl was by the sink washing her face when she looked in the mirror, and saw the drops of water on her face not as what they really are but as drop of blood. And at her back, there was a headless man in soldier’s uniform.
Every year, students would encounter various but similarly scary experiences in that toilet. According to my research, the St. Vincent de Paul building, where the toilet is, is the oldest building of Adamson University and was used as an execution station by the Japanese army during World War II. Rumor has it that countless number of heads had been chopped off in the toilet itself.

ATENEO DE MANILA UNIVERSITY
Sacred Heart Novitiate: The story of the “stairs” is one that forces retreat-goers to go around ! in the “safety” of groups. Legend has it that late one night, a group of students went downstairs to go “exploring” after the others had gone to sleep. The frightening thing was that no matter how long They kept going down the flights of stairs from the 3rd floor dorm hall they occupied, they could not seem to find the ground floor landing.
Even more sinister was that they kept passing the same eerie painting of Christ at each floor landing, over and over again.

COLLEGE OF SAINT BENILDE
It happened few years ago in College of Saint Benilde. In an early morning class, a girl in black dress entered room M-409 where a class was ongoing. The class didn’t mind the girl thinking that she was only sitting in. Suddenly! , in the middle of the teacher’s lecture, the girl stood up, walked towards the front wall and, to the awe of everyone, vanished. Until now that ghost story still scares students who take classes in the said room.
